joandidionnovelAnne Hathaway is set to star in an adaptation of Joan Didion’s political thriller The Last Thing He Wanted.

Mudbound director and screenwriter Dee Rees will be directing the film for Netflix.

“Dee Rees is an incredibly talented filmmaker who continues to make provocative and entertaining films,” Netflix film group head Scott Stuber said. “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Dee and proud to have her as part of the Netflix family.”

Set in the 1980s, Anne Hathaway plays the lead role of Elena McMahon who walks off the presidential campaign she has been covering for a major newspaper to do a favour for her father. Elena's father does deals. And it is while acting as his agent in one such deal—a deal that shortly goes spectacularly wrong—that she finds herself on an island where tourism has been superseded by arms dealing, covert action, and assassination.

A release date has not yet been announced.
