Walt Disney Studios has announced an adaptation of the bestselling Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. The eight book science fiction fantasy series has sold over 20 million books. The final book was released last year.

The adaptation will be produced by Harvey Weinstein with Robert DeNiro as executive producer. The live action adaptation will be taken from the first two books in the series which follows twelve-year-old villain, Artemis Fowl, the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history and a millionaire. His bold and daring plan is to hold a leprechaun to ransom. But he's taking on more than he bargained for when he kidnaps Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance Unit). For a start, leprechaun technology is more advanced than our own. Add to that the fact that Holly is a true heroine and that her senior officer Commander Root will stop at nothing to get her back and you've got the mother of all sieges brewing! In the second book Artemis Fowl’s father is held to ransom and only he can save him.

Eoin Colfer summed up his series as ‘Die Hard’ with fairies. Walt Disney could do wonders with this material. The script will be written by Michael Goldenberg famed for penning the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix script. No word yet on who will be starring in this adaptation. Perhaps Robert DeNiro might make an appearance.
