If you are looking for a family drama then this book is for you.
Trollope has written seventeen novels including the contemporary reworking of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. She is adept at bringing to life family relationships with all their fractured love and despair.
In Balancing Act four strong women all work in the family business. Susie Moran has always been the breadwinner in her family. Her three daughters now work in the family business but when they decide the business needs to take a different direction Susie has to reflect on her past and present life.
When her estranged father Morris returns to the country and embeds himself with Susie’s family things begin to break apart. Her husband Jasper has always looked after the girls but now they have their own lives he is looking for something more to fill the void. Jasper is unsettled for the first time in their married lives and Susie’s daughters seem to no longer support her in a business she founded.
The reader is drawn to the Moran family, a normal family with problems we all might face at some point in our lives. Trollope’s skill lies in her ability to create believable family life. A fantastically readable novel from a terrific author.
