This debut novel from Berndt Sellheim launches him into the literary scene. Beyond the Frame’s Edge is a compelling novel that delves deep into the psyche of a broken family.
Adyn Cole leaves behind the bright lights of New York to return to Australia. He has enjoyed the trappings of wealth during his ten years in New York including an apartment with glimpses of Central Park which he shared with the woman he loved. However with the economic collapse his job has gone by the wayside along with his relationship.
Ten years after his arrival in New York Adyn Cole sits on a plane bound for Australia nursing a Scotch. He has been summoned to return home by the death of Fletcher, his beloved uncle.
Adyn finds himself favourably endowed by his uncle’s estate, causing unrest within the family. Marcus, Fletcher’s belligerent son has been overlooked as have other members of his family. An outpouring of greed follows as family members jostle for a share in Fletcher’s estate.
Central to the legacy left behind is Koorawatha, a rambling home in the Blue Mountains that Adyn has inherited. It is a far cry from Adyn’s life in New York. With no job and no immediate secure future Adyn finds solace in the company of two other residents who have been renting the house. Slowly they build a rapport and trust is established between the three as they spend time climbing the rugged, but beautiful terrain of the Blue Mountains.
Adyn’s family continues their mission to fight for the inheritance they feel rightfully belongs to them. Each one has their own interests at heart with future plans for Koorawatha mapped out. Adyn remains determined that his uncle’s wishes should be adhered to.
Sellheim’s novel pits the beauty of the outside world against the brutality of greed for material wealth, highlighting the terribleness of human nature when money is at stake and desire threatens to undermine familial bonds.
A bold and powerful novel from a new literary talent.
