Breaking Cover by Stella Rimington

On July 29, 2016

By Sophia Whitfield
Dame Stella Rimington joined the Security Service (MI5) in 1968. During her career she worked in all the main fields of the Service: counter-subversion, counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. She was appointed Director General in 1992, the first woman to hold the post. Rimington certainly has the experience to make her thrillers seem credible. Her first Liz Carlyle novel was published in 2004, Breaking Cover is her ninth novel featuring Liz Carlyle.

The astute Liz Carlyle is still recovering from the death of her partner. She is working in a more sedate environment, in a desk job for MI5ís counter-espionage desk. However, a new Cold War is heating up and as a result, Liz finds herself on the hunt for a Russian spy.

With MI5 and MI6 coming under public scrutiny, security is something that is beginning to feel increasingly remote. The public is concerned about new surveillance tactics.

The Secret Service hires young civil rights lawyer Jasminder Kapoor who had previously been outspoken about civil liberties to be their media advisor to stem he publicís discontent. Things donít quite go to plan with the newly appointed position causing even more problems.

Rimingtonís gripping thriller makes Cold War tension a reality. You can buy the book in Australia here and in the UK here.
