Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse is about to premiere in Sydney. It is a lavish spectacular involving 45 horses and featuring 36 riders, aerialists, dancers and musicians from all over the world. 80 locals have been hired to assist with this mammoth production.

Created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil, the production is a unique mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects. Latourelle was in Sydney, together with his son Matthew, who began his career selling popcorn at Cirque du Soleil at the age of five, to see the magnificent 10-story White Big Top rise in minutes.

The stage is not in the round, but a more traditional theatre stage with the audience sitting directly in front of the stage. Either side of the Big Top two tents have been erected to allow the horses to accelerate and decelerate once off stage. Horses get up to an incredible speed of 35 miles per hour.

Cavalia: A Magical† Encounter Between Human and Horse premieres in Sydney on May 15 and has been extended until June 2. Here is a sneak peek at the show.
