Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

On October 24, 2013

By Sophia Whitfield

Based on the 1988 film with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and book by Jeffrey Lane, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centres on two con men on the French Riviera. The first is the sophisticated and successful Lawrence Jameson, played by Tony Sheldon, the other a small-time crook named Freddy Benson (Matt Hetherington).

Steve Martinís interpretation of Freddy Benson made the 1988 film an instant hit. The film itself was based on Bedtime Story, a 1964 film starring David Niven and Marlon Brando.

It is hard to follow up such comedic well loved talent, but Tony Sheldon and Matt Hetherington have admirably stepped into these well worn shoes. Sheldon emanates all the suave sophistication his role demands, balanced by Hetheringtonís depiction of a bumbling, but thoroughly likable crook. Together they create the required chemistry necessary to carry off their ploys.

Set in the French Riviera, in the town on Beaumont-sur-mer, this is a dazzling production, full of colour and sparkle. Supported by a fantastic ensemble cast, the dancing is elegant and the humour slapstick.

John Wood clearly enjoys himself playing Frenchman Andre Thibault who lands himself in the perfect bit of bother. Amy Lehpamer plays Christine with characteristic elegance and Katrina Retallick is outrageous as Jolene Oakes the girl from Oklahoma.

It is a show full of energy, one not to be missed.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrelsopened last night and†is playing at the Theatre Royal.
