Pride is based on the true story of two unlikely groups who come together to support one another. Set in 1984 amid the bleak minerís strike during Thatcherís era, the film is livened up by its homage to 80s music.
Joe (George MacKay) inadvertently finds himself involved in a march to support gay pride. Still living at home and unable to reveal the truth about his sexuality he is drawn to a group of idealists with their 80s quiffs and punk personas.
This quirky group realise the police have finally left them alone to keep the mining strikers at bay. Having themselves been on the end of police batons, they decide to form an organisation to assist the miners in their plight. Calling themselves LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) they band together united in their cause.
Joe lies to his parents as he joins the merry group to assist the broken village of Onllwyn in the valley of Dulais, a village of out of work miners struggling to make ends meet. The small Welsh village however is not so convinced that this marginalised group will help them. Instead they feel they could add to their woes. The village led by the feisty Hefina (Imelda Staunton) and subdued Cliff (Bill Nighy) become divided by their prejudices. Hefina and Cliff are determined to turn their village around hoping they will accept the help of the LGSM.
Jonathan (Dominic West) is the most colourful member of the LGSM. The film is worth seeing for Westís epic disco scene.
A heart-warming film that will take you back to a time when disco was cool.
