Featuring the music from the great Scottish band, The Proclaimers, this feel good film will leave you feeling jubilant.
Following in the footsteps of musical Mamma Mia, Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill) directs Sunshine on Leith, a heartfelt musical about family and home set in the streets and pubs of Edinburgh, adapted from the acclaimed stage musical by Stephen Greenhorn.
Best pals Davy (George Mackay) and Ally (Kevin Guthrie) return from duty in Afghanistan to their lifelong residence in Leith, just outside Edinburgh. They soon rekindle romances, Ally with Davy’s sister Liz (Freya Mavor), and Davy with Yvonne (Antonia Thomas), his little sister’s best friend from work. While Davy finds it difficult to move on from the horror of Afghanistan, Ally is keen to settle down and move forward with his life.
Davy’s parents, Rab (Peter Mullan) and Jean (Jane Horrocks) are thrilled to have their son home just as they are in the throes of celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. But in the midst of the homecoming and celebrations a dark secret from the past threatens to unravel everything Rab holds dear, throwing his family life into disarray.
Music features throughout the film with the familiar hit I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) adding a catchy soundtrack to this feel good story. It is a good deal of fun and despite some dark subject matter joy emanates.
Sunshine on Leith is out in cinemas across Australia today.
