It has been announced that the thirteenth Doctor Who, following Peter Capaldi’s exit after the Christmas special, will be played by Jodie Whittaker. In the teaser trailer Whittaker pulls back the hood of her jumper to reveal her identity.

Whittaker will be the first female Doctor Who. She previously made a name for herself starring as grieving mother Beth Latimer in the TV series Broadchurch.

Whittaker said, "It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope."

Since Doctor Who first aired in 1963 the role has up until now only been played by men.
