Half Moon Bay by Helene Young

On July 8, 2013

By Sophia Whitfield

If you are a fan of romance fiction you will love Helene Young’s latest novel. Full of suspense, Half Moon Bay will have you turning the pages quickly to discover the final conclusion.

The novel opens in Afghanistan where photojournalist Ellie Wilding is about to meet up with her sister Nina. Together they work as a team, Nina writing the stories and Ellie providing the photos. But on this fateful day Ellie arrives to find her sister critically injured during an assignment. Her sister does not survive the journey home.

Ellie flees to South Africa to escape her grief, but two years later, on her return to her hometown of Half Moon Bay on the north coast of New South Wales, she finds herself embroiled in a small town struggle with developers. She soon realises the corruption runs deeper and finds herself going back to material her sister Nina had uncovered.

Ex-Major Nicholas Lawson has also spent the last two years running from Nina’s horrific death. No longer in the military Nick is working with the government to uncover current and past misdeeds.

Nicholas Lawson and Ellie Wilding meet up in Half Moon Bay as adversaries. Ellie has no memory of meeting Nick the day she arrived in Afghanistan to find her sister critically injured and is far from enamoured by his assured presence and charm.

Ellie begins looking into the corruption surrounding Half Moon Bay. As she digs further so more is revealed and a connection begins to show itself between Nick Lawson and Nina Wilding. The more Ellie discovers the more her life is in danger. She struggles to know who she can trust. She needs someone on her side to help guide her and help her through as she goes back to the painful events surrounding her sister’s death.

A hugely enjoyable page-turner.
