Jared Leto is to take on the role of American pop artist Andy Warhol in a film titled Warhol.

Terence Winter, who wrote The Wolf of Wall Street, will pen the screenplay, based on Victor Bockris 1989 book, Warhol: The Biography.

Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, originally named Warhola. After studying pictorial design he moved to New York and worked as a commercial artist. In 1960 he began to make paintings based on newspaper title pages, advertisements and other mass-produced images, and from 1962 to use silkscreen for the largely mechanical production by himself and assistants of series of easel paintings of the now renowned 'Campbell's Soup Cans', 'Coca-Cola Bottles', and portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley and Jackie Kennedy. He later became increasingly active as an experimental film-maker, the films made by him and Warhol Films Factory Inc. include Sleep (1963), Chelsea Girls (1966), Lonesome Cowboys (1968) and Trash (1970).

His studio, The Factory, was a well-known gathering place for distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. He is notable for openly living as a gay man before it was deemed acceptable, and he is credited with coining the widely used expression "15 minutes of fame".

Leto is the perfect choice to play Warhol. He won an Oscar for his role as a gay man dying of AIDS in Dallas Buyer’s Club (2013). He has most recently played The Joker in the hit Suicide Squad and is filming the sequel to Blade Runner.
