Judi Dench is to play Queen Victoria for the second time. She first played Victoria in Mrs Brown, starring alongside Billy Connolly, and was nominated for an Oscar for her role.

Victoria and Abdul tells the tale of Queen Victoria and a young clerk who travels from India for the golden jubilee. The young clerk became her confidante, replacing John Brown, much to the disapproval of those around Queen Victoria.

Victoria and Abdul once more brings together director Stephen Frears and Judi Dench. They worked together previously on Mrs Henderson Presents and Philomena. Frears’ latest film was Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant.

The film is based on Shrabani Basu’s book Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closet Confidant. You can read the book here before the film is released.
