Jules Faber illustrates The Kaboom Kid

On December 22, 2014

Jules Faber grew up the sixth of eight kids, with five older brothers and two younger sisters. Having a lot of time alone and being bored too often, he taught himself to read at age four. He then continued to voraciously ingest books throughout his childhood. He loved all sorts of stories in all sorts of genres. He enjoyed reading vintage stories by Enid Blyton and Captain W.E Johns and loved Phantom comics. He loved Maurice Sendak’s books and Dr Seuss and they made him realise anything can happen in cartoons and it’s more than okay. So at age ten he decided he wanted to draw and began teaching himself that as well. It’s a more complex lesson than reading, and it continues to this day.

Jules is also a published author, and has written numerous stories in all manner of genres including short fiction, science fiction, comics and young adult fiction. He likes it best when words and pictures work together in a beautiful symbiosis where both need each other and work together to successfully flourish.

He has worked in many aspects of cartooning and illustration, including comic strips, editorial cartooning, live caricature, and of course, children’s book illustration. He is a multi-award-winning illustrator and cartoonist, a former teacher, an accomplished pizza maker, a passionate advocate for cartooning, a lecturer and a lover of movies. Since childhood his favourite animals have been the seahorse and the rhinoceros. His most fun job today is sharing everything fun about his childhood with his seven year old daughter. She doesn’t like everything he did, but they can agree on comics and drawing and movies.

Jules recently illustrated The Kaboom Kid series written by cricket legend David Warner. The new four book series is for kids aged 8-11. This illustration is taken from the third book, Keep It Down!, out in January, published by Simon & Schuster. The first two books in The Kaboom Kid series are available now.
