Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace is to be adapted for a six-hour Netflix series.
Sarah Polley (Away From Her) is writing and producing and Mary Harron (American Psycho) will direct the true crime series.

True Blood’s Anna Paquin and 11.22.63’s Sarah Gadon are set to star with Atwood taking on a cameo role in the series. She revealed in a recent press conference,
“I'm going to be a disapproving lady in a church. Typecasting.”

Alias Grace follows the popular trend for true crime series such as The People V OJ Simpson and Netflix’s Making a Murderer.

Set in the 1800s, the novel follows the true story of Grace Marks, a notorious figure in the 1840s who was imprisoned for twenty eight years for the murder of Thomas Kinnear, her wealthy employer, and Nancy Montgomery, his mistress and housekeeper.

Atwood recreates the events by using Grace’s relationship with Dr Simon Jordan as a vehicle for retelling the story of Grace’s past. Dr Jordan’s fascination with Grace’s case prompts him to move to be closer to her. The story is set during Grace’s incarceration where Dr Jordan studies her with a view to opening his own asylum.

The book was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize. You can buy the book in Australia here and in the UK here.
