The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm by Lore Segal and Maurice Sendak
Dad would tuck us up with wedges of apple to clean our teeth then settle on a chair, book in hand. Always Brothers Grimm – we were not a Hans Christian Anderson sorta family; we liked our fairy tales dark. I especially liked it when fingers or hands were chopped off and bed became the musty refuge of intact limbs. I loved these for their magic too, the transmogrification, the getting lost in the woods and the wending out. I was aware writing my second novel that there was something Grimm in its mood and shape. (This edition for Sendak’s drawings.)
