Annie Clark will direct a new adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

In the most exciting move yet Clark is rumoured to be casting a woman as Gray.

The classic novel was first published in 1891. It is the tale of Gray, who enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. It has lost none of its power to fascinate and disturb.

No further details have been released about the cast or the release date.

The script will be written by David Birke (Elle, Slenderman). In the 2009 film adaptation starred Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Colin Firth.
