Philip Pullman is set to release a new three-part series to stand “beside” His Dark Materials. Twenty-two years after the first book (Northern Lights) in His Dark Materials was published, The Book of Dust will fill the void for fans of the original series, with the character Lyra at the centre of the story.

The book in the new series is set 10 years before Northern Lights. It starts at the beginning of Lyra Belacqua’s story. Alethiometers, daemons and the Magisterium all feature in the book but a new hero, “an ordinary boy”, will also be introduced.

“I know from their letters and tweets that my readers have been waiting patiently (mostly) for The Book of Dust for a long time," Pullman said. "It gives me great pleasure and some excitement at last to satisfy their curiosity (and mine) about this book."

"I’ve always wanted to tell the story of how Lyra came to be living at Jordan College and, in thinking about it, I discovered a long story that began when she was a baby and will end when she’s grown up," Pullman said. "This volume and the next will cover two parts of Lyra’s life: starting at the beginning of her story and returning to her 20 years later," Pullman said.
