I have just returned from a week in New York where my daughter and I celebrated her graduation from school. Below are a few of the places we discovered. All of them terrific. If you are heading there soon try out these places to eat. I also highly recommend pizza in New York, it is the epicentre of huge pizza slice and you can get it just about everywhere.
Balthazar, 80 Spring St
We had the best meal of our trip here. Located in Soho it is the perfect stop to refuel before hitting the shops. The interior reflects a Parisian café and this time of year it is all lit up with Christmas lights. There is a bar at the back of the restaurant if you just want a drink, but I recommend a meal. The place is busy so be prepared to wait for a table.
Serendipity 225 East 60th Street (between Second Avenue and Third Avenue)
Known for its frozen hot chocolates you may remember this place from the film Serendipity starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. You will get the best sundae in town here. They are huge so be prepared to share. The food is also good, but you cant leave without having one a sundae. Children love this place. You may have to wait up to an hour and a half for a table so turn up, put your name down at the door and pop next door for a spot of shopping at Bloomingdale’s. Head back one hour later and your table should be ready for you.
Alice’s Tea Cup
There are three of these in central New York. We went to the one on 81st Street which is only a short walk from the Met. They have a huge array of scones. I had the buttermilk with cream and jam. They brew their own tea and serve it up in gorgeous teapots. It is only small, but oh so quaint with beautiful murals of Alice on the walls. They also do a good looking breakfast.
Featured in Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada Magnolia Bakery is known for the perfect cupcake. There are a number of stores in New York; we went to the one in Bloomingdale’s. There is no seating inside this store, but you can stand looking out of the window in a bar area with your cupcake and coffee to go. A good way to prepare yourself for going back out into the snow.
Bergdorf Goodman Restaurant - 7th Floor
Pay a visit to the restaurant here. The department store is so opulent. The beautiful presentation carries with it a hefty price tag. My advice is wander through to take in something quite special, but head for the restaurant. You can have tea and cake with a fabulous view of Central Park. If you are not eating a meal, like us, you will be directed to the sofa at the front of the restaurant just behind the bar. Here you can soak up the atmosphere without the price tag. We sat next to a lady who was informing her guest loudly that she was about to shoot a pilot, which she insisted he must be in. When he was not forthcoming she continued to let him know she was in town for The Hobbit premiere. She was also just on the sofa having just tea and cake. Great fun!
