Review: Ghost Stories

On July 16, 2015

By Jessica Leafe
A West End thriller seen by 450,000 people worldwide has been reworked for its Australian season at the Sydney Opera House, set to spook audiences for a six week run.

Written by Brits Jeremy Dyson and actor/magician Andy Nyman, it is a show where storytelling shares the stage with other forms of theatre, and a few good laughs are thrown in between the gasps for the occasional comic relief.

Without spilling the show’s secrets and ruining its element of surprise, Ghost Stories is uniquely entertaining and satisfyingly creepy. But if you are the type to yawn in the face of fear, the show’s set and production design will still impress, with seamless effects and a visually evocative atmosphere. The presenting cast were also terrific performers.

The show advises that children below 15, pregnant women and people who suffer adversely from shock or strobe do not attend … but there is no need to worry about not being able to take it; the fear factor is spooky without becoming full-blown horror. There is also no gore, for those hoping to become immersed in blood and guts.

A successfully eerie and surprisingly delightful piece of entertainment, Ghost Stories makes for a refreshing change of tone at the theatre, and is highly recommended.

Ghost Stories is playing at the Drama Theatre of the Sydney Opera House until 15th August. Tickets and further information here.
