Romola Garai (Briony in Atonement) is set to star in the BBC adaptation of Jessie Burton’s debut novel The Miniaturist.
Burton’s novel was the winner of both the Waterstones Book of the Year award 2014 and the Specsavers Book of the Year award 2014 and has to date sold 489,471 copies.
The thriller is set in 1686 Amsterdam, and filming is taking place in both Holland and the UK. The adaptation will be broadcast later this year.
Garai will play Marin, the sister of wealthy merchant, Johannes Brandt.
She said: “I'm so happy to be part of this superb adaptation of Jessie Burton's exquisite, genre bending novel The Miniaturist. Marin is a character with an extraordinary journey of true complexity and depth. I am also truly honoured to be working alongside such an extraordinary cast and creative team on bringing this moving and iconic story to life.”
The central character is eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) who one day in 1686 knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. She has come from the country to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt, but instead she is met by his sharp-tongued sister, Marin (Romola Garai). Only later does Johannes appear and present her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in unexpected ways . .
Nella is at first mystified by the closed world of the Brandt household, but as she uncovers its secrets she realises the escalating dangers that await them all. Does the miniaturist hold their fate in her hands? And will she be the key to their salvation or the architect of their downfall?
Burton said: “This is an adventure for my book I never dreamed possible, and I’m so happy that The Miniaturist is in such capable and creative hands. The assembled cast is perfect to the vision I had in my mind’s eye in every way, and I know they’ll make magic. Kate Sinclair [The Forge's executive producer] has created an exciting and powerful framework for the story to be told – and, quite simply, I cannot wait to see it on the screen.”
