Sam O’Sullivan stars with Emma Palmer in Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s production of Constellations. Directed by Anthony Skuse, this two-hander comedy at the Eternity Playhouse runs until 7 September. Constellations is the creation of young British playwright Nick Payne. Its original opening in 2012 at London’s Royal Court House and following run at the West End won it the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play. It is a play about possibilities, where infinite universes are explored in the orbit of a single relationship. Roland, a beekeeper, meets physicist Marianne at a barbeque, and despite being an unlikely match, their love’s dependence upon fate and free will is investigated in this explosive comedy.
Were you familiar with the success of Constellations in London before being cast in the play?
Yeah, I was. I'd heard people talking about it and read it out of curiosity and loved it. And when you Google it you start seeing the London reviews pretty quickly. It's a bit intimidating but exciting as well. At the end of the day, I think you need to acknowledge that stuff and then put it to one side as best you can.
Is this the first time working with co-star Emma Palmer? How has it been working in such a small cast?
Yes. She's a champ. We've become good mates. Two handers can leave you very exposed and I think we make a good team. Why? What'd she say?
How has production designer Gerald Xavier Mansfield adapted the decently sized performance space of the Eternity Playhouse for a two-actor cast?
The production team have been very focused on working with the whole space rather than adapting it in a heavy handed way. I think the result is beautiful.
In January Jake Gyllenhaal will play your role on Broadway. What advice would you give him?
Ha! On second thought maybe don't Google the play.
Tell us a little about Constellations?
It's a love story told against the backdrop of Multiverse Theory. But the science is more of a leaping off point than the crux of the story. It's not a lecture. It's a very human story (whatever that means). And there are jokes.
What do you hope the audience will take away from Constellations?
I hope it makes the world seem bigger to people. It's about the choices we make every day and how that can affect our lives in drastic ways. And it's also about how, sometimes, we don't have a choice. Life is just going to happen and you just have to roll with it.
