The reviews are in and they are quite unexpected. The Telegraph called the film 'electric', The Guardian was slightly less enthusiastic, "a better-than-it-has-to-be adaptation". There was praise for Dakota Johnson's "impressive performance" and Sam Taylor-Johnson's "winning adaptation". Take a look at what the critics had to say.

“Director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s surprisingly winning adaptation of the runaway Twilight-fan-fiction-turned-bondage-fantasy novel.” Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

" ... the lead performances and sleek style choices sell it almost irresistibly to the target audience, but the film has the confidence to end bruisingly unresolved, with the structural equivalent of a slap in the face." Tim Robey, The Telegraph

"The real find in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s better-than-it-has-to-be adaptation of the risibly written and ludicrously popular softcore novel is Dakota Johnson. Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

It has an impressive performance from Dakota Johnson (daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, granddaughter of Tippi Hedren.) But it doesn't really feel like a date movie. Philippa Hawker, Sydney Morning Herald

"Substituting heartache for handcuffs, Fifty Shades is the rare studio romance in which the characters actually try to understand one another. As this is the first installment of an epic trilogy, how much there is beneath the surface remains to be seen, but Taylor-Johnson seems genuinely interested in finding out. David Ehrlich, Time Out New York

Fifty Shades of Grey is out today.
