Catlin Moran’s brilliant novel How to Build a Girl is semi-autobiographical, and reveals the hardships and humour in coming of age. The successful book is about to be adapted for the screen with a star-studded cast.
The novel begins in 1990 with Johanna Morrigan, fourteen, shaming herself so badly on local TV that she decides there’s no point in being Johanna anymore and reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde—fast-talking, hard-drinking Gothic hero and full-time Lady Sex Adventurer. She decides to save her poverty-stricken Bohemian family by becoming a writer.
The director Coky Giedroyc has been credited with TV episodes of The Killing and The Hour; two very well received shows. Moran herself will write the screenplay with her typical blend of humour and poignancy.
The cast will consist of Beanie Feldstein whose brilliant performance in the coming of age film Lady Bird makes her ideal for the role of Johanna Morrigan. Alongside her will be Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) as rock star John Kite.
Caitlin Moran commented on Twitter on the cast: “Beanie is just… astonishing. The world is going to EXPLODE with love for her.”
The film adaptation of How to Build a Girl is set for release in 2019.
