The Naked Magicians is an R-rated magic show appearing in a short season at The Concourse in Chatswood this weekend. A combination of comedy, magic and nudity, this is a playful piece of entertainment that flirts with the whole auditorium, only occasionally checking out its own reflection while it does so.
Despite the show’s title, most of the audience seemed unsure of what to expect from an act called The Naked Magicians. Entertainers Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler enter the stage fully clothed (false advertising) and looking like waiter-illusionists who moonlight as strippers. By the end of the show though, there is nothing left to the imagination.
Both magicians are 30-year-old entertainers who have worked as magicians internationally and in Australia, on television and as part of live stage acts. The show is a magic show and the tricks are great – but the act is carried by the comedy and novelty of its nature. The magicians are cheeky (literally), cocky (also literally) and play their audience with a practised spark.
For some strange reason, male nudity gets funnier as it escalates, finally ending the show on a note that has you questioning how they came up with the idea to do this.
If you don’t like sexual jokes, blow-up dolls and Magic Mike, you may still enjoy it anyway. If you do like these things, you’ve set yourself up for your ideal night. Watch the show with a drink, sit in the middle at the back if you don’t want to be selected for audience participation and relax into your inner bachelorette – don’t gear yourself up for intellectual theatre and social commentary.
If you have a spare ticket, don’t bring your dad. This show is one step down (or up, depending on the bride) from a hen’s night, and while they might appreciate the comedy and magic, most of the show will be wasted on them.
Definitely entertaining and with some guaranteed laughs, the world tour for The Naked Magicians has a short season at The Concourse in Chatswood as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival (until 9th May) before heading to New Zealand. For more information or to book go to their website.
