With the Anzac Centenary still very much in our thoughts comes a heart-wrenching tale based on a true story. Inspired by the author’s family history, The Soldier’s Wife examines young love tested by trauma and war.

Set in Sydney during WWI, Hart tells the tale of changing times when women had to take the lead in a man’s world while their husbands and fathers fought overseas.

Newlyweds Ruby and Jimmy are convinced their love will survive anything. But when Jimmy gets shipped off to fight Ruby is left alone to fend for herself in a world dominated by men. As she struggles with being the only woman working in a timber yard she takes solace in Jimmy’s letter of love and adoration.

As time goes on Ruby watches others receive the dreaded telegram. The loss around her is acute. Husbands and sons gone forever. Ruby works through the anguish gaining the respect of those around her.

As time goes on the balance in life shifts. Ruby knows the war has changed her and everyone around her.

A soaring tale of Sydney during WWI and the sweeping change it brought to a community.
